What kind of things will I learn about in VI’s equine studies program?
Virginia Intermont not only instructs equine studies students in riding, but strongly emphasizes knowledge of the horse, care of the horse and practical, hands-on experience in several areas, such as stable management, training, instructing, horse show management and more. VI’s equine graduates leave with a well-rounded knowledge of horsemanship that can benefit them in any aspect of the industry.

Will I have a chance to compete at horse shows?
Yes! VI competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s Region 3, Zone 4, the Interscholastic Dressage Association, and the International Intercollegiate Equestrian Association, as well as traveling to numerous local and regional horse shows. Furthermore, VI holds Campus Cup competitions several times throughout the year as well as the annual VI Horse Trials and a A-rated horse show at the Lexington, Va., Horse Center.

Can I bring my own horse to Virginia Intermont? If so, can I ride my own horse in classes?

Yes, the Riding Center offers horse boarding on a first come, first served basis for $3,900 per academic year. It is recommended that students who are interested in boarding at the Riding Center reserve a stall as early as possible. Yes, you can ride your own horse in classes provided the horse is schooled through the skill level of the class. However, we do recommend you ride other horses for some classes, as riding a variety of horses creates a more skilled and versatile rider.

Do I have to have my own horse to come to Virginia Intermont?
No. VI has 65 school horses available for students to ride.

Do I need to bring my own tack?

It is strongly recommended that you bring your own tack and grooming equipment. Although we do have some tack and supplies at the Riding Center, it is preferred that you bring your own tack and equipment and a trunk.

What riding disciplines does Virginia Intermont teach?
VI focuses on English riding, with classes in eventing, dressage, show jumping, equitation and hunter-jumpers.
