Frequently Asked
Questions
What kind of things will I learn
about in VIs equine studies program?
Virginia Intermont not only instructs equine studies students
in riding, but strongly emphasizes knowledge of the horse, care
of the horse and practical, hands-on experience in several areas,
such as stable management, training, instructing, horse show management
and more. VIs equine graduates leave with a well-rounded
knowledge of horsemanship that can benefit them in any aspect
of the industry.
Will I have a chance to compete at horse shows?
Yes! VI competes in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Associations
Region 3, Zone 4, the Interscholastic Dressage Association, and
the International Intercollegiate Equestrian Association, as well
as traveling to numerous local and regional horse shows. Furthermore,
VI holds Campus Cup competitions several times throughout the
year as well as the annual VI Horse Trials and a A-rated horse
show at the Lexington, Va., Horse Center.
Can I bring my own horse to Virginia Intermont? If so, can I ride
my own horse in classes?
Yes, the Riding Center offers horse boarding on a first come,
first served basis for $3,900 per academic year. It is recommended
that students who are interested in boarding at the Riding Center
reserve a stall as early as possible. Yes, you can ride your own
horse in classes provided the horse is schooled through the skill
level of the class. However, we do recommend you ride other horses
for some classes, as riding a variety of horses creates a more
skilled and versatile rider.
Do I have to have my own horse to come to Virginia Intermont?
No. VI has 65 school horses available for students to ride.
Do I need to bring my own tack?
It is strongly recommended that you bring your own tack and grooming
equipment. Although we do have some tack and supplies at the Riding
Center, it is preferred that you bring your own tack and equipment
and a trunk.
What riding disciplines does Virginia
Intermont teach?
VI focuses on English riding, with classes in eventing, dressage,
show jumping, equitation and hunter-jumpers.
