The Major in History is designed
so that students, in consultation with their faculty
adviser, can plan a program which draws upon a variety of fields
of study.
The major is intended (1) to develop an understanding of our
rich national traditions, of our Western heritage, and of other
great historical civilizations, (2) to assist students in gaining
a better understanding of the forces which guide and control the
society in which they live, (3) to produce an understanding of
human institutions and values, and (4) to enable undergraduates to
begin careers in various government and service agencies, and to
prepare for graduate study in such areas as college teaching,
government service, city management, urban planning, and law.
The licensure requirements are subject to change by the
Virginia Department of Education. Programs of study are
altered accordingly when changes are deemed necessary to assure
that candidates meet licensure requirements.
