As a Baptist-affiliated institution, Virginia Intermont has always encouraged the personal exploration of spirituality and religion by its students. Intermont focuses on the individual experience and understanding of religion on a broad scope. Religion and philosophy classes are geared to inspire questions and individual thought, while looking at religion critically and academically, as well as emphasizing the importance of service to the community.

Religion majors at VI are expected to take an active role in the community, whether it be serving at local churches as youth directors, ministers of music or even pastors. Intermont’s Christian Student Union (CSU) is very active with local organizations, and participates in a number of service projects ranging from serving meals at the local Haven of Rest Rescue Mission to helping with the construction of houses for the less fortunate. Students are invited to attend weekly prayer meetings and Bible study groups and participate in a variety of other outreach activities.

The most important aspect of a religion major is to develop a strong spiritual and moral understanding of human nature and how religion can enhance daily life. There are a number of opportunities for these students through working closely with the College’s chaplain and faculty and by learning the deeper benefit of service to the community – and the world.
