Frequently Asked
Questions
Do I need to have an extensive art background-will
everyone know more about art than I do?
We recommend that you take as many art classes/workshops as
you can, but extensive experience in visual arts is not necessary;
many students have very little prior training before coming
to Virginia Intermont.
Where can I get art materials & supplies?
Right on campus. Our student store has a wide variety of materials
and can special order just about anything you might need.
Can I transfer art credits from a community
college?
We welcome transfer students . Our faculty will meet with you
to discuss your previous course work in order to arrange the
most advantageous transfer of your credits and place you in
the proper classes within our program.
What makes Virginia Intermont's art program
different from a large college or university?
The small class size and personal attention you will receive at
VI are especially important to your growth and development as
an artist. At many large colleges and universities you attend
classes with dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of students at a time.
Despite our small size we offer close to 40 different art courses
in all.
Is it possible to have two majors?
Though art is a time-consuming major, some students do double-major.
The B.A. program offers you the flexibility to pursue your other
interests in-depth; for example: art and photography and digital
imaging. You may also chose to minor in a second area, or with
faculty advice, you can pick beneficial courses from many majors.
How many Art majors are there?
Usually between 30 and 40 at any given time.
How big are classes?
Class size is limited in order to emphasize individualized instruction.
2-D Design, 3-D Design, and Elements of Drawing are our largest
studio classes and seldom have over 15 students; advanced courses
average five students.
Can I be closed out of an art class?
Course offerings are based on students needs-and art majors
are preregistered for these classes. You will never be closed
out of required art classes. Openings in advanced classes are
always available to qualified transfer students.
What is the emphasis of the art curriculum?
The first two years of our curriculum provide a well-rounded
introduction to virtually every field of art--drawing, painting,
sculpture, computer art, art history, ceramics, graphic design,
and printmaking. During your junior and senior years, you have
the option of choosing a concentration in one or more of the
studio art areas.
Are there art scholarships or awards?
There are numerous awards and scholarships designated for returning
art majors. New students and transfers may qualify for an art
scholarship of up to $1500 per year. These scholarships are
based on a portfolio review by the art faculty.
What if I have more questions?
We welcome your questions. Feel free to contact a member of our
faculty by phone or e-mail.
Are there additional opportunities for art majors?
By taking various workshops, art students may visit major galleries in the Richmond and Washington, D.C., areas. Through the Worrell Honors Program for Study Abroad, they study art history and pursue their own artistry in Germany, England, Scotland-and may choose other countries as well. By participating in internships with local businesses Intermont students build impressive portfolios and gain the "real world" experience so valued by employers. Many of our recent art graduates have gone on to prestigious graduate schools. And many are enjoying successful careers.
