Virginia Intermont has been known for years for its excellence in IHSA riding. Currently VI is a member of Region 3 of Zone 4. Other R3Z4 members include: Appalachian State University, Duke University, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Martin Community College, North Carolina State University, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Wake Forest University.

VI participates in eight regular horse shows, as well as regionals, zones and nationals. A tradition of participation in the National Tournament of Champions has also been added to the calendar. Among its history, VI has had numerous regional and national team placings and well as 12 Individual National Champions. All VI Riding teams are considered varsity athletics.
